The Four Rules of Leash Walking: Simple Tips for a Better Walk with Your Dog

Walking your dog should be one of the most enjoyable parts of your day — not a tug-of-war match or a source of stress. At K9 Kindergarten, we believe a well-structured walk creates confidence, calm, and a stronger bond between you and your pup.

Here are our Four Essential Rules of Leash Walking to help make every walk a success:

1. Potty First, Walk Second - Before you head out, make sure your dog has had a chance to relieve themselves. This helps them focus on the walk instead of searching for a potty spot.

2. Choose a Side and Stick With It - Whether it’s your left or right, consistency is key. Keep your dog on the same side for both walking and training. This builds predictability and reduces leash confusion.

3. No Greetings During the Walk - While it may be tempting to let your pup say hi to every dog or human you pass, it’s best to hold off. A focused walk teaches self-control and calm behavior — and avoids overstimulation or pulling.

4. Save the Praise for the End - Saying “good dog” mid-walk might feel encouraging, but your pup could interpret it as a signal that the walk is over — leading to pulling or excitement. Hold the praise until you finish your walk to keep things structured and clear.

With consistency and calm leadership, you’ll find your walks become smoother, more enjoyable, and way more connected.

🐾 Enjoy your time with your best friend — and happy walking!
