Many pet owners ask how long it takes for their dog to learn an underground dog fence. At K9 Kindergarten, we follow a proven training process that usually takes about 7ā10 daysĀ for most dogs to fully understand their yard boundaries.
For best results, your dog should be at least 4 months oldĀ (around 6 months for smaller breeds) before beginning fence training.
We complete three professional fence training sessions with your dogĀ to ensure they clearly understand the boundary before they are allowed to roam freely on the property.
š Phase 1: Tone Awareness (Days 1ā3)
The collar is set to tone only or level 1.⢠Walk your dog on a leash around the yard.⢠When the collar beeps near the boundary flags, gently guide the dog back into the yard.⢠Reward them for returning to the safe zone.
š Phase 2: Introduction to Correction (Days 3ā4)
A low-level static correction is introduced.⢠If the dog enters the boundary zone, the correction occurs.⢠Encourage the dog to retreat back into the yard.⢠This helps the dog associate the boundary with staying safely inside.
š Phase 3: Distraction Training (Days 7ā10)
We begin adding temptations and distractions such as toys or balls outside the perimeter.⢠The dog learns to ignore distractions and remain inside the boundary.⢠We also teach owners how to safely walk their dog through the boundary for walks.
š© Removing the Training Flags
Boundary flags are gradually removed over several daysĀ once your dog consistently respects the boundary.
Important Training Tips
ā Collar Safety - Remove the receiver collar daily to prevent skin irritation. The collar should fit high on the neck with one finger between the probes and the skin.
ā Consistency - Training sessions should be short (10ā15 minutes)Ā but frequent ā about 2ā3 times per day.
ā Behavioral Health - If your dog shows stress, pause training, play with them, and resume later at a slower pace.
ā Supervision - During the initial training phase, do not leave your dog unattendedĀ in the yard.
